WHERE IS BULGARIA?

Bulgaria is in southeastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea, between Romania and Turkey. The country is slightly larger than the state of Tennessee and on the same parallel as Michigan. Approximately 7.6 million people live in Bulgaria, most of whom are Bulgarian Orthodox, although there is also a significant percentage of Muslims. The government is a parliamentary democracy. Bulgaria, a former communist country, joined European Union in 2007, has had economic stability and positive growth rates since a major economic downturn in 1996 led to the fall of the then socialist government. However, 35% of the population is still below the poverty line and the unemployment rate is very high.
